Mandatory Off Days For Maids (MOM Regulation)

Starting from 1 Jan 2023, it is mandatory for employers to provide their Migrant Domestic Workers (MDWs) with at least one rest day a month that cannot be compensated away. 

What Is The Objective of Implementing The Rest Day Policy?

This policy aims to ensure that MDWs have the opportunity to rest and recharge from their work, as well as to socialize with their friends and maintain their mental well-being.

It is crucial to understand the importance of giving MDWs their deserved rest days. By allowing them time off to relax and rejuvenate, you are not only complying with the law but also showing compassion and respect towards your domestic worker.

How To Compute Off Day Compensation For My Maid?

• Maids working in Singapore are entitled to one rest day a week. 
• These rest days can be compensated in-lieu if the Maid agrees to work on her rest day. 
• Assuming your Maid's salary is $650 per month (before any compensation),
  her 1 day salary = $650 / 26 Days = $25.
• Remember, 1 of such off days CANNOT be compensated and must be taken.

How Can Rest Days Be Arranged?

Remember, communication is key. Discuss with your MDW about their rest day preferences and come to a mutual agreement on the arrangements. Whether it's a weekday, Saturday, or Sunday, it's important to consider their needs and preferences.

• Maid's Rest Days need not be on a Sunday. It can be arrange any day of the week.
• The rest day can be taken as 2 half days if mutually agreed.
• A rest day cannot be deferred by more than a month. Any deferment must be mutally agreed.

As responsible employers, it is your duty to provide new MDWs with a rest day within the first month of their employment. By following the guidelines and ensuring that your MDW gets the rest they deserve, you are not only abiding by the law but also creating a positive and respectful working environment.
