As adults in the hectic and demanding world of Singapore nowadays, we might find it common for us to hear complaints, from people we know, people on the internet, or through movie shows, that it is not easy to have our parents (from both sides) and children to take care of at the same time. The challenge is visibly multiplied if either you or your other half is the only child of the family. However, what you might not realise is how incredibly blessed these people are - to be able to enjoy the company of three generations of family members.
However, depending on the financial situation, the time you have, and the health that your family members are in, there is no doubt that taking care of so many people can be challenging - especially if you are the sole breadwinner of the family. It is hard enough that you have work to do to financially support the people you love, but it is equally hard to distribute your time and energy for both the young and old after you come back from work. This is where domestic maids come in. Having an extra pair of hands around the house can do wonders for your time, energy, and sanity.
Why there’s no one-size-fit-all maids
Firstly, we need to understand that there is no one-fit maid for everyone. Every family has their own troubles and difficulties. That reflects the priorities in the type of help that they need - babysitting the kids, taking care of the elderly, or even pets. In general, housekeeping is expected of domestic maids, and we are able to train our maids to keep the house clean. However, some situations might require a more skilled maid that has had experience or undertaken a training program to give special care to the young and old.
What to expect
Depending on the maid in question and the domestic maid agency of which you hired your maid from, your maid might or might not have already undertaken a caregiver training program. The elderly might require special attention, and their specialised treatment should stem from understanding. Our home-based caregiver training program includes teaching domestic helpers the basic understanding of ageing, and how to treat the elderly with proper care. Our maids are also taught how to properly communicate with seniors, and how to ensure their safety at home to minimise the risk of accidents. Safety, hygiene, and infection control is given to properly ensure that domestic maids can properly groom and ensure the personal hygiene of the elderly. In the case of the elderly who have trouble moving, we train the maids to transfer them safely and comfortably from wheelchairs to beds, or vice versa. Domestic maids who are trained in caregiving will also be taught to keep an eye out for things that might contribute to accidents and mishaps, such as slippery bathroom floors, or obstructed pathways. They can also be trained to properly record and report information to anyone else in the family who might find the information useful. These training sessions will be conducted by registered nurses. Basic caregiving for children will also be provided where they can take cater to a child’s needs, or satisfy their appetites with delicious food. Cooking courses are also provided where you can send your existing maids there to improve their cooking skills for the meal benefits you and your family.
